A Brexit Who’s Who

David Cameron : Prime Minister of the UK who held the referendum which resulted in the UK choosing to leave the European Union.

Theresa May: Prime Minister of the UK at the time of writing who signed the letter which triggered Article 50 and thus the beginning of the UK’s exit from the EU.

Donald Tusk: President of the European Council since December 2014, Tusk is essentially the overall head of the negotiating table opposite Theresa May.

Boris Johnson: Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Johnson is one of the most senior government ministers. His post is comparable to that in other countries of Foreign Minister and therefore will play an important role in overseeing negotiations between the UK and the EU.

Nigel Farage: Despite being the leader of a party with little to no actual power, Farage was an influential figure in the lead-up to Brexit, being one of the most vocal people in the ‘leave’ camp. Although he is a Member of the European Parliament, he is now highly unlikely to play anything other than a commentatory role in any negotiations.

David Davis: Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, Davis will directly oversee Brexit negotiations. Ultimately, along with the Prime Minister, Davis will likely be held responsible for the success or failure of the exit procedure.

Tim Barrow: Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the European Union, Barrow was the diplomat who physically delivered the Article 50 letter to Donald Tusk. Most likely reporting directly to David Davis, Sir Tim will head up the negotiating team.

Michel Barnier: European Chief Negotiator for Brexit, Barnier is essentially Sir Tim Barrow’s opposite number. A senior French politician, he is expected to take a pretty tough negotiating stance.

Didier Seeuws: A Belgian politician who has been appointed by the EU to lead an internal task force to handle the UK’s exit from the EU. How influential - and even how public - his role is to be is not yet particularly well known, but it is likely that his name will be heard more as time goes on.

Angela Merkel: As Chancellor of Germany Merkel is responsible for Europe’s largest economy, with an even higher GDP than the UK. Although she holds no official Brexit-specific role, Angela Merkel is expected to take a front seat over the two-year period and will surely be highly influential in the EU’s position on a range of areas of discussion.
